Born in Snow Lake, Manitoba, I had lived in Red Lake, Thunder Bay, Flin Flon, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Calgary by the time I was 20. In Calgary I started mixing rock cover bands touring the bars, doing three sets, six nights a week. I moved up to working at Rocky Mountain Sound as a loader and was head tech & shop foreman a few years later. This was my introduction to festivals, corporate events and house gigs mixing mostly monitors for anyone who came through town including Meatloaf, Tammy Wynette, Jeff Healey and John Entwhistle.
I ended up in Toronto working as a freelance mixer and touring tech for acts such as BTO, 54-40, Pursuit of Happiness and Bruce Cockburn. During this time I also did a lot of shows with The Comfort Sound Mobile assisting in the recording of artists like Ozzy Osbourne, many Much Music broadcasts.
My first real studio experience was in Nashville where I was technical assistant at The Soundshop several months. This studio had the first 48 track SONY digital recorder in town and there were sessions for Alison Krauss, Kenny Rogers and Michael Martin Murphy. A connection there lead me to Lakeside Studios in Clayton, Ont. where I engineered Susan Aglukark’s first record and a lot of country music.
A stint doing monitors for The Tragically Hip was the beginning of my building and running of The Bathouse Studio in Bath, Ont, where I worked on recordings for Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Lisa Brokop and Blue Rodeo. Eventually I opened Signalpath Recording in Almonte, Ont., where I’ve hosted Hawksley Workman, Jeremy Fisher and The Sadies.
I’ve continued to do a lot of shows, been part of over 200 recording projects, built a few studios and mixed some broadcast. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some great mentors and collaborators along the way and have kept pace with the evolution from analog to digital and have many good uses for both. I can always find ways to make myself useful when there’s recording, mixing, amplifying or broadcasting sound and music happening.
